Left eye
This picture began with a need to get as close as possible. Not the whole face, not a situation — just the eye. The place where something always leaks through, whether you want it to or not. A gaze that cannot quite be controlled.
I was preoccupied with painting what happens in the transition between the inner and the outer. The eye is not only a motif, but an opening. Something that both sees and is seen at the same time. The closer I came, the less it was about likeness and the more about intensity. Colour, pressure, small displacements that keep the gaze from ever quite settling.
There is something restless in this. Not dramatic, but constantly present. As if something were trying to hold itself back and not quite managing. That is where the picture lies for me.
This figurative painting moves within Norwegian contemporary art and examines the gaze, presence and psychological tension. An original painting for sale, aimed at collectors of figurative art with an interest in portrait fragments and in what happens in the detail.
The painting is by Trond Berg-Nilssen.
