Red cups

In this large oil painting I try to describe Generation Z — laughter, closeness, bodily presence — together with a reflection on what that lightness actually holds. The figure at the centre rests in herself, surrounded by friends, plastic cups and fluid boundaries between individual and group. Everything seems spontaneous and at the same time almost staged, as if the moment already knew it was being observed.

When I think about Generation Z, I see a generation balancing between freedom and awareness. They have grown up with a constant stream of images, where every moment can be shared, judged and archived. In this picture I wanted to capture exactly that duality: a genuine joy that nonetheless carries traces of performance. The hand holding the bottle, the glances that meet, the bodies leaning in — all of it is both lived and displayed.

The colours are intense, almost oversaturated, reflecting a reality where the impressions are never turned down. At the same time I let the paint run, a reminder that control is always temporary. Because beneath the surface there is a vulnerability: a need to belong, to be seen — not only through the screen, but in real space.
