EMU

This art print is a figurative portrait of an emu, owned by Per Alver, and forms part of my exploration of where the animal gaze meets the human one. I wanted to give the emu a presence that goes beyond the purely zoological — an individual, not merely a motif. Its intense, almost wondering gaze meets the viewer directly and creates an unexpected relationship.

The strong pink background breaks with the natural and places the subject in a more psychological, contemporary context. It is a device I often use in my figurative paintings to lift the subject out of the documentary and into a more emotional space. A tension arises here between the realistic and the staged.

As a Norwegian artist I work within contemporary art with a focus on identity, presence and the gaze. The work can also be read as a study in character and individuality, in which the animal emerges with a personality of its own.

This is an art print for sale by Trond Berg-Nilssen, part of a series exploring how we perceive and project emotion when we meet other beings.

One exclusive print is mounted on an aluminium plate, 50 × 70 cm.
